[3:1]  1 tn Or “desert.”

[4:17]  2 tn Grk “and to say.”

[8:6]  3 tn Grk “and saying, ‘Lord.’” The participle λέγων (legwn) at the beginning of v. 6 is redundant in English and has not been translated.

[8:6]  4 tn The Greek term here is παῖς (pais), often used of a slave who was regarded with some degree of affection, possibly a personal servant (Luke 7:7 uses the more common term δοῦλος, doulos). See L&N 87.77.

[9:24]  5 tn Grk “They were laughing at him.” The imperfect verb has been taken ingressively.

[9:38]  6 sn The phrase Lord of the harvest recognizes God’s sovereignty over the harvest process.

[9:38]  7 tn Grk “to thrust out.”

[11:12]  8 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[11:12]  9 tn Or “the kingdom of heaven is forcibly entered and violent people take hold of it.” For a somewhat different interpretation of this passage, see the note on the phrase “urged to enter in” in Luke 16:16.

[12:47]  10 tc A few ancient mss and versions lack this verse (א* B L Γ pc ff1 k sys,c sa). The witness of א and B is especially strong, but internal considerations override this external evidence. Both v. 46 and 47 end with the word λαλῆσαι (“to speak”), so early scribes probably omitted the verse through homoioteleuton. The following verses make little sense without v. 47; its omission is too hard a reading. Thus v. 47 was most likely part of the original text.

[12:47]  11 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[12:47]  12 tn Grk “seeking.”

[13:11]  13 tn Grk “And answering, he said to them.” This construction is somewhat redundant in English and has been simplified in the translation. Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[13:11]  14 tn This is an example of a “divine passive,” with God understood to be the source of the revelation (see ExSyn 437-38).

[13:11]  15 tn Grk “to you it has been given to know.” The dative pronoun occurs first, in emphatic position in the Greek text, although this position is awkward in contemporary English.

[13:11]  16 tn Grk “the mysteries.”

[13:11]  sn The key term secrets (μυστήριον, musthrion) can mean either (1) a new revelation or (2) a revealing interpretation of existing revelation as in Dan 2:17-23, 27-30. Jesus seems to be explaining how current events develop old promises, since the NT consistently links the events of Jesus’ ministry and message with old promises (Rom 1:1-4; Heb 1:1-2). The traditional translation of this word, “mystery,” is misleading to the modern English reader because it suggests a secret which people have tried to uncover but which they have failed to understand (L&N 28.77).

[14:24]  17 tn Grk “The boat was already many stades from the land.” A stade (στάδιον, stadion) was a unit of distance about 607 feet (187 meters) long.

[15:37]  18 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

[16:13]  19 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[16:13]  20 map For location see Map1 C1; Map2 F4.

[16:13]  21 tn Grk “he asked his disciples, saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn) is redundant and has been left untranslated.

[18:22]  22 tn Or “seventy times seven,” i.e., an unlimited number of times. See L&N 60.74 and 60.77 for the two possible translations of the phrase.

[19:25]  23 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[19:25]  24 sn The assumption is that the rich are blessed, so if they risk exclusion, who is left to be saved?

[22:3]  25 tn See the note on the word “slave” in 8:9.

[25:16]  26 tn Grk “traded with them.”
